Ontwerpen aan een klimaatrechtvaardige wereld

The discomfort of scarcity

The EFL Foundation calls attention to the effects of climate change with a focus on humanity and justice. Scarcity ask for difficult and sometimes painful decisions. It causes discomfort. How to design and push positive and radical directions to ensure our planet is a just place for everybody.

Open call Design for climate justice.

Through the Open Call ’Designing for Climate Justice' the EFL Foundation invited multidisciplinary teams to give their vision on Climate Justice. It is becoming increasingly clear that the effects of climate change do not affect people around the world indiscriminately. They appear to exacerbate existing social divisions and to push people already experiencing difficulties into a deeper state of misery.

Discomfort is not the first association evoked by research undertaken by designers. Normally, they design exactly what society demands. Even so, that very emotion undeniably surfaces in an exploration of themes such as scarcity and distribution. The theme of justice quickly leads to notions of fairness and what each of us takes that to mean. In line with this, a discussion about justice can result in clashes of interest. What is fair to one person is unaffordable to another. Can we pass anything on to other regions of the world? And how do you persuade people when taking decisions about what is and is not just? Is our own decision-making process structured in an equitable manner?
Through three projects the EFL Foundation show the results how their open call on climate justice.
